First Hunt of the Season

I met Bill Pollard out at Mitchell Farms in Beauregard, AL for an afternoon hunt on Saturday. We had a great time and worked four dogs. I worked Covey on her first birds and she did great for an 8 month old pup. Her nose is strong and her excitement level is up, way up, especially when the bird gets up! I am trying to keep things just plain fun for her at this age. As long as she is excited and wants to hunt for me, that is all I need from her this Fall. Liz was next and I killed six birds over her. She is as steady as a rock. I am spoiled training the other dogs due to her. She trained me!! This was her first hunt since last March and she did as well, maybe even better on her first hunt of this season than she did after all the hunts put together last year. We then ran Cooper, Bill's male Brittany, and he did a fine job. He is something else and has a funny personality to boot. Cooper always pees on the first bird killed over him! I guess he is letting us know who is boss. Kayt was last, just at dusk, and the birds where calling and flying everywhere to covey-up for the night. I managed to kill one for her though. What a nose. She locked up sliding stiff as a board into her first point of the season....about 35 feet from the covey of birds. She sure is pretty and stylish, also very fun to watch. It is hard to believe that she is as solid as she is at just 1 year and 4 months of age. Anyways, we had a great afternoon and were able to shoot a mess of birds that I cleaned and grilled on Sunday for Daddy's birthday! Happy Hunting.
